The Mervyn Holmes Challenge Bowl was contested for on the Kennet & Avon Canal at Harding's Bridge. The draw took place in bright early morning sunlight and the canal looked to be in good condition. The whistle went for the all-in and the rain started at the same time as the fishing and stayed with us for most of the day. The skimmers did not show and the the only fish to be caught were small Perch and small Roach.
Mike Taylor successfully retained the 'Rosebowl', fishing from peg 1 and catching 2lb 12oz of Roach to 4 ounces using single bronze maggot to the reeds on the far side of the canal. Second place went to Martin Smith who caught 1lb 12oz of bits on single maggot fishing open water in the turning bay at peg 3. Third place was taken by Ben Groom fishing peg 5 and catching 12oz of bits from the bottom of the far side shelf.
16th Oct 2010 • Club Match - River Avon, The Crane - 10am To 3:30pm
1st - Bob Teakle - 2lb 15oz - peg 10
2nd - Adam Smith - 2lb 8oz - peg 7
=3rd - Martin Smith - 1lb 15oz - peg 1
=3rd - Phil Seymour - 1lb 15oz - peg 8
With a lack of rain and colour in the water, combined with a bright sunny autumn day, the fish were hard to find, and it was the anglers at the top end of the field who fared best on the day.
The winner was Bob Teakle, who fished a feeder 3/4 across the river from peg 10 and caught a mixture of Roach and Perch for 2lb 15oz. In second place was Adam Smith fishing a feeder tight to the boats on the far bank of peg 7, catching mostly Chublets for a weight of 2lb 8oz.
Joint third place went to Martin Smith and Phil Seymour, fishing at pegs 1 and 8 respectively. Both anglers banked 1lb 15oz of mixed fish by float fishing down the middle of the river.
14th Aug 2010 • Club Match - Farleigh Wood - 10am To 4pm
1st - Bob Teakle - 32lb 0oz - peg 7
2nd - Martin Smith - 28lb 10oz - peg 3
3rd - Mike Taylor - 25lb 9oz - peg 2
Our latest Club Match at Farleigh Wood was won by Bob Teakle with 32lb from peg 7. Fishing his favorite method - a cage feeder into open water - Bob caught a mixed bag of silvers and Carp to 3lb using sweetcorn over a bed of ground bait.
Second was Martin Smith fishing a method feeder with 8mm hair-rigged halibut pellet. Martin fished peg 3 and caught 28lb 10oz fishing tight to the Island. Like Bob, Martin also had a mixed bag of silvers and small Carp to 4lb.
Third place went to Mike Taylor fishing peg 2. Mike poled worm over pellet at 13 meters centre catching 25lb 9oz of mainly Carp to 3lb.
1st Aug 2010 • Club Match - Century Island Pond - 2pm To 7pm
1st - Adam Smith - 26lb 11oz - peg 18
2nd - Bob Teakle - 22lb 15oz - peg 22
3rd - Martin Smith - 17lb 8oz - peg 26
It was the 3 corner pegs of the Island Pond that produced the winning weights of the afternoon match. Adam Smith fished peg 18 and weighed in 26lb 11oz of Carp to 4lb, fishing pellet and maggot over pellet in the margin.
Second place went to Bob Teakle fishing corner peg 22. Bob fished tight to the edge and caught a mixed bag of Carp and Roach, alternating between bread and soft pellet for a total weight of 22lb 15oz. Third place went to Martin Smith fishing 4 meters centre off peg 26. Martin landed 17lb 8oz of small Carp and Roach.
24th Jul 2010 • Club Match - River Avon, The Crane - 10am To 3:30pm
1st - Martin Smith - 11lb 1oz - peg 11
2nd - Paul Mogg - 5lb 4oz - peg 8
3rd - Ian Tucker - 5lb 1oz - peg 13
Following the working party to open up swims on the Crane stretch of the River Avon, the first of our two matches was fished between the cattle grid and the gate to the second field.
With the cattle grid swims failing to produce good weights, it was Martin Smith who took full advantage and bagged 11lb 1oz of mixed fish including the best fish of the day a 5lb 15oz Bream, caught on worm over a maggot feeder from peg 11.
Second place went to Paul Mogg fishing peg 8 with 5lb 4oz. Paul caught most of his fish in the last two hours close to the near side bank on maggot. Third place went to Ian Tucker fishing peg 13. Ian fished a float and a maggot feeder 3/4 across the river and caught a mixed bag of fish for 5lb 1oz.
Eleven anglers turned out for the Keeling Cup and the venue for the match was fields 18 and 19 of the Mill Ground. All eleven anglers weighed in and all the winning weights were from field 18. Nigel fished a waggler down the middle of the very slow moving River Chew at full depth, catching a mixed bag of Roach, Rudd, Eels and small Trout.
8th May 2010 • Club Match - Boyd Valley Lake - 9am To 1pm
1st - Martin Smith - 14lb 4oz - peg 10
2nd - Jamie Seymour - 12lb 4oz - peg 3
3rd - Adam Smith - 11lb 14oz - peg 4
First was Martin Smith with 14lb 14oz from peg 10. Martin caught a steady flow of Carp and silvers from both margins on the pole and switching to the island to pick of the odd carp on the lead.
Runner-up was Jamie Seymour with 12lb 4oz fishing a straight lead to the gap between the islands from peg 3 using corn. Third was Adam Smith with 11lb 14oz fishing peg 4.
8th May 2010 • Club Match - Boyd Valley Lake - 2pm To 7pm
1st - Adam Smith - 26lb 10oz - peg 2
2nd - Martin Smith - 16lb 8oz - peg 5
3rd - Phil Seymour - 14lb 10oz - peg 3
First place went to Adam Smith fishing peg 2, catching an all-carp haul of 26lb 10oz, fishing the right hand margin. Second place went to Martin Smith with 16lb 8oz fishing the margin off peg 5. Third place went to Phil Seymour alternating hair rigged corn on a straight lead and a hair rigged pellet waggler tight to the island from peg 3.
27th Mar 2010 • Club Match - Kennet & Avon Canal - 10am To 3:30pm
1st - Ben Groom - 2lb 5oz - peg 1
2nd - Dave Weaver - 2lb 4oz - peg 3
3rd - Mike Tucker - 1lb 10oz - peg 15
Twelve anglers turned out for the second Match of the year which was fished on the Kennet and Avon Canal. Punched bread over liquidised bread was the most productive bait and most of the fish caught were in the first two and half hours of the contest.
Ben Groom won the Match with 2lb 5oz from peg 1 with a mixed bag of Skimmers and small Roach. Ben continues his winning streak, claiming 3 wins in succession. Second place went to Dave Weaver fishing peg 3. Dave fished similar tactics to Ben and pushed Ben all the way, weighing in 2lb 4oz. Dave may well have taken the lead from Ben had he not missed his keep net with 2 of the fish he caught.
Third place went to Mike Tucker with 1lb 10oz of bits. Mike drew end peg 15 and chose to fish under the bow of a moored boat, catching just enough to beat off Jamie Seymour and Mike Taylor who weighed in 1lb 9oz each. Although the weights were well under expectations, the Match was a close-fished contest with only 13oz between 1st and 6th place.
13th Mar 2010 • Arthur Edwards Cup - Mill Ground (Chew) - 10am To 3:30pm
1st - Ben Groom - 4lb 5oz - peg 8
2nd - Ian Tucker - 3lb 0oz - peg 9
Ten anglers turned out for the Arthur Edwards Memorial Cup on the Mill Ground stretch of the River Chew, but only two were able to catch. Ben Groom was first with 4lb 5oz of small Chub. Ben caught most of his fish using a waggler baited with worm from peg 8. Runner-up was Ian Tucker fishing peg 9 with 3lb.
Several of the Association's waters are near overhead power lines carrying up to 132,000 volts. These lines are within reach of rods and poles. Members must maintain a safe fishing distance and must NOT carry assembled rods or poles under these power lines. Always look up.
The next Annual General Meeting will be held on Monday 2nd October 2017 at Keynsham Cricket Club, 7:30pm prompt. All Members are eligible to attend.
